Career Change

The Problem

Turning a passion for aviation into a career

After taking a flight in a Piper Aztec with his stepfather at 15 years old, Dalton became fascinated by aviation. Flying over his high school was the moment he realized he was “hooked.”

Inspired by the experience, he began taking flight lessons and pursued his private pilot certificate. Once he passed his checkride, he made the ultimate decision to turn his passion for flying into a professional career.

With his goal of becoming a pilot at American Airlines, Dalton needed to find the right flight training program to take him from private pilot to a professional airline career.

Choosing ATP

The Solution

ATP's proven reputation in the airline industry

While researching flight programs near him, Dalton came across ATP Flight School’s training facility in Georgetown, Texas, after a recommendation from his stepfather. As someone who continued to guide and mentor him throughout his aviation journey, his stepfather often spoke about the positive experiences he had with pilots who were ATP Flight School graduates.

At 18 years old, Dalton toured the training center and knew ATP was the next step toward his goal of becoming a pilot at American Airlines. One of the biggest factors in his decision making was ATP’s reputation as the number one program chosen by airlines. He was also impressed by ATP’s fleet, saying, “I do think that ATP has the best selection of airplanes for pilots to train in.”

After earning multiple licenses and ratings through the program, Dalton returned to ATP as a flight instructor. He describes the culture at his training center as “very tight knit,” where everyone was there “ to help one another and see each other succeed.”

For Dalton, the most rewarding part of being an instructor was watching his students accomplish the same goals he once worked toward. Seeing them pass their checkrides and complete the program served as a reminder of how far he had come since his first flight lesson. “The more work you put into something, the more you’ll get out of it,” Dalton says. “With ATP, the harder you work, the more you study, and the more you fly, the bigger that you are going to be.”

Reaching the Airlines

The Outcome

From ATP to American Airlines, by 25 years old

That mindset carried Dalton through each step of his aviation journey. He started ATP's program at just 18 years old, joined Envoy at 21 years old, and by 25 had earned a seat in the flight deck at American Airlines as a Boeing 737 First Officer, turning a dream that once felt years away into reality.

Reflecting on his experience, Dalton believes ATP continues to make a meaningful impact on the aviation industry. “ATP is very positively affecting the aviation community by training very knowledgeable candidates and overall improving aviation safety.”

His journey is a testament to the opportunities that can come from hard work, dedication, and a commitment to continuous learning through the right program.
